A New Alternative to Debit Cards

A New Alternative to Debit Cards

For decades, debit cards have been the standard for credit card alternatives. It has been virtually impossible to find a reloadable card that is tied to one's balance-on-hand that also does not require a bank account. With the new advent of reloadable prepaid cards, also called "reloadable debit cards", consumers have an alternative that is safe and easy to use, so long as they remember a few things about using these cards.

Reloadable prepaid cards are sometimes called "prepaid credit cards", although this is a misnomer. These cards do not open a line of credit, and are based only on the amount of money one has at that time. There are some other similarities, however. A prepaid card still requires an applicant to offer personal information, such as their name, address, phone number, etc. These cards do not, however, require good credit or banking history to acquire, making them a reasonable alternative for those who cannot open bank accounts.

Because the card manufacturer has the consumer's personal information, it is important to be aware of the terms and conditions of each card. These can vary widely depending on the issuer. Some offer excellent customer service, consumer protection up to a certain amount, and provide account access for free. Others charge for their accounts, not only to open them but for other services as well. Certain companies may charge for everything from checking account balances to reloading to ATM use. It is this wide variety of differing charges that make reviewing the conditions of one's card service absolutely essential. Similarly, not all cards have the same monetary protections. The fact that one may lose their card or worse, have it stolen, is a reality for owners of any card. Card insurance is the single most important factor in a card-buying decision. The other variable factor to look out for is cardmember perks. One company claims to offer insurance protection, along with roadside assistance for card holders and global assistance for members who may have problems abroad.

For many people, prepaid reloadable cards are the best option in lieu of carrying cash or checks. Because of the newness of this industry, there are many different companies offering their services. So long as one is aware of the differences between each type of service, these reloadable cards can significantly assist one in their future endeavors to spend and purchase
